Mercy of Creation

RAHMATAL LIL AALAMEEN

Wama Arsalnaka illa Rahmatal lil aalameen. 21:107

And We have sent you (Muhammad PBUH)

not but as a mercy for the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and

all that exists).

The direct meaning of this verse is that Prophet Mohammed PBUH was sent as a mercy on all creations. What distinguishes Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) from other Prophets of Allah that Allah calls him as mercy upon the mankind? What is the mercy of the Prophet PBUH on the creations? Mercy can be expressed in various ways. The most acknowledged miracle of the Prophet PBUH is the Holy Quran.

As Bibi Ayesha Rz said, “Prophet Mohammed PBUH is the Quran walking.” This means that the Quran is one of the mercies of Prophet Mohammed PBUH. However, this miracle does not distinguish Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) from other Prophets of Allah who received the revelations like Moosa (AS), Isa (AS) and Dawood (AS) and the others who were given booklets. Neither does Shariah distinguishes Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) from others as the laws of the religion started from Adam (AS) and perfected over time. The obligations of humans towards the creator Allah were added from one Prophet of Allah to other until the advent the last Prophet of Allah Mohammad (PBUH) and the seal of sainthood Mahdial- Ma’ud (SAS). What is the greatest mercy of the Prophet on all of the creations? What could be a greater mercy than the word of Allah? The answer is seeing Allah Himself in this world. There can be no mercy greater to creation than the vision of the creator Himself. Allah (SWT) invited His beloved Prophet for His vision. This is the mercy that is mentioned in the verse above. Although, other Prophets of Allah had the desire to see Allah and some even asked Allah for His vision but no other Prophet of Allah was invited for His vision. Just as Prophet Mohammed PBUH is the perfect example to be followed, the event of Ascension (Meraj) is the perfect example where it can be understood that there is no bigger mercy on creation than meeting its creator. Can you meet your creator in this world? Yes, of course. If there was no possibility then there would be no reason for the event of Meraj. If this meeting could be achieved only by the prophets, then there would be no reason to set an example which could not be reached by the creations. This is the greatest mercy of the Prophet PBUH. How can we achieve this mercy? Remembrance (zikrullah) is the key to achieving this mercy as Quran says,

 

So remember Me; I will remember you.

And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me 2:152.

 

In similar way, in Hadith-e-Qudsi Allah says:

Take one step towards me, I will take ten steps towards you.

Walk towards me, I will run towards you.”

 

If we remember Allah, Allah remembers us. If we take a step towards Allah, He will take ten steps. If we walk, He runs towards us. Therefore, if we desire His vision, will He not desire our vision? In this way remembrance is the first step to gaining the greatest mercy of Prophet Mohammed PBUH. Prophet Mohammed PBUH said the greatest of remembrance is “la ilaha il Allah”. In short, there is no God except Allah. Allah also says in the Quran that remembrance is the greatest form of worship.

Wa la zikrullahi akber 29:45.

Allah also says in Quran:

 

I created the jinn and humankind only that

they might worship Me 51:56.

 

According to the Quran the greatest of worship for humans and jinns is remembrance. In hadithe- Qudsi, Allah says,

I was a hidden treasure felt to be known so I created creation”.

Creations were created to worship and know Allah. This lays out the path where we can remember Allah and lead us to knowing Allah. This is the sole purpose for all creations.

The importance of remembrance is such that it becomes the base for all of our worship. This knowledge of remembrance during the time of the Prophet Mohammed PBUH, was passed to a few people who were capable of understanding it. This could be clearly understood from one of the sayings of Hz Ali RZ “I have been given some knowledge, which if I share with people they will declare me kafir and kill me”. Prophet Mohammed PBUH said, “The difference between someone who remembers His Lord and someone who does not is like the difference between the living and the dead.”(Bukhari) Remembrance makes our worship alive. In another hadith-e-Qudsi Allah says: My servant continues to draw nearer to Me with additional devotions until I love him. When I love him, I become the hearing with which he hears, the sight with which he sees, the hand with which he strikes and the foot with which he walks. Were he to ask for something I would surely give it, and were he to ask for refuge, I would surely grant him refuge (Bukhari). If additional devotion is nafl/sunnath, which is a common understanding of most of the scholars, then what will be the result of remembrance of Allah? It will not be lesser than Allah loving us and becoming our hearing, our sight, our hand and our foot with which we hear see and walk. This is the greatest mercy of Allah on His creations. The other reason for Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) being the mercy on the humanity is Allah sent the seal of sainthood and His Caliph Mahdi-al-Ma’ud (PBUH) from his progeny to guide humans and jinns to attain Meraj. The advent of Mahdi AS was to make this knowledge common to all of the creations. As Mahdavis, we all know how much importance Mahdi AS gave to remembrance. One of the aspects of this remembrance is perpetual remembrance (zikr-e-khafi). This is performed with every breath that is taken in and let out. Mahdi AS once said, “Breathing without remembrance is dead breath.” (Jo sans bina zikar kay legayi, woh sans murda hai). Breathing is an action that brought Adam AS to life. If it was not for the breath of Allah then Adam AS would just be a model of clay. Allah says in Quran:

So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of

My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration. 38:72

Man is also full of desires (nafs) and these desires are the veil between the creator and the creation. Prophet Mohammed PBUH once said: Whoever knows himself knows his lord. To know ourselves we need to know our nafs/desires. Allah guides us in this direction when He says:

“Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned. 29:57.”

There are three stages of the soul that is defined in Quran, which are:

And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.12:53

1. AMMARA: Which is prone to evil and, if not checked and controlled will

lead to perdition (total destruction, ruin). (Syed, 2012)

For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah. Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron.13:11

2. LAWWAMA: Which feels conscious of evil, and resists it, asks for God's grace

and pardon after repentance and tries to amend; it hopes to reach salvation;

(Syed, 2012)

[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, Return to your Lord, well-pleased

pleasing [to Him] 89:27

3. MUTMAINNA: the highest stage of all, when it achieves full rest and

satisfaction. (Syed, 2012)

The common thing that affects the stage of the soul is nafs/desire. It is the nafs of wealth, nafs of fame, nafs of respect etc. is the nafs that have to taste death before the soul reach the stage of mutmainna.

Allah says in Quran:

Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the

remembrance of Allah: for without doubt in the remembrance of

Allah do hearts find satisfaction.13:28.

 

To reach the stage of satisfaction we need this constant remembrance of Allah.

Even before becoming a prophet, Prophet Mohammed PBUH use to visit cave Hira often. The purpose of Prophet Mohammed’s PBUH visit the cave Hira was to meditate. This meditation of Prophet Mohammed PBUH is the Remembrance of Allah. This greatest form of worship is what made possible the greatest event of meeting your creator. This is the reason why Allah says:

Wama Arsalnaka illa Rahmatal lil aalameen. 21:107
