Why Do We Observe This Tradition. . .

Why Do We Observe This Tradition
On The 10th of Muharram Every Year?

Some ritual practices observed traditionally by our community are very simple and easy to perform but carry a lot of significance. To ask forgiveness for our words and deeds which might have hurt or offended our fellow-beings is a simple thing but it works a lot to clear the atmosphere of hatred and animosity among the Brothers and Sisters in Faith. Even where there is no animosity it brings about a person to person mutual understanding. It promotes harmony and peace among members of the community.

It is commonly believed that Hazrat Imam Hussain grandson of the Prophet PBHU did this just before going into the battlefield. All the men among his companions and members of family were already martyred except himself and his son Imam Zainul Abedin who was sick at that time and therefore, could not got into the battle field. Imam Hussian RZ sought forgiveness from all the members of his family and others for his own words and deeds if they offended anybody. It is said that this is the origin of this great tradition.

We should keep up this noble tradition because it is perfectly in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Qu’ran. The Holy Book asks us to observe forgiveness as follows:

Pardon and forgive (their offence if any).
Do ye not with that God should forgive you.
Truly God is graciously Merciful.                     ( An Noor 18:24).

In the light of the above verse, this Noble tradition is in accordance with the teachings of Quran. While forgiving fellow human beings we may hope that Allah, the most Merciful may forgive ourselves.

In respect of one’s wife and children, Quran instructs us as follows:
“Forgive them and be lenient, for God Himself is Lenient and Merciful. “   ( Tagabun 64:14)

Hence, this virtuous tradition should be kept up and sincerely observed, especially by our younger generation. The best way is to perform it by meeting people. Otherwise, it can be performed over the telephone or by writing letters or e-mail etc. We may say or write:

“Please forgive me for the sake of Allah if my words or deeds have offended you.”
Wastay Allah Kay  Mera Bola Chala Maaf Farmain

This tradition holds so many rewards for us in this world as well as in the hereafter.

May Allah enable us to perform more and more good deeds, Ameen.

In the Name of Allah the most beneficent and most merciful.

Forgive those who hurt us & seek forgiveness from those whom we have hurt. Allah will not forgive those who have not been forgiven by the people whom one has hurt.
